Earth's crust holds enough clean energy to power civilization for 1,000 years. And scientists just found it.
Literally trillions of tons of hydrogen.
A massive, untapped energy reserve may be hiding beneath our feet. A new study published in Science Advances reveals that Earth could hold over 6 trillion tons of naturally occurring hydrogen gas deep underground—enough to power the planet for centuries.
Led by Geoffrey Ellis of the U.S. Geological Survey, researchers suggest that even extracting just 2% of this "geologic hydrogen" could supply the world's hydrogen needs for 200 years, significantly advancing global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
Unlike industrial hydrogen, which is energy-intensive to produce, geologic hydrogen forms naturally through underground chemical reactions and has already been discovered in countries like Mali and Albania.
The energy potential of these reserves surpasses all known natural gas sources, positioning hydrogen as a powerful, clean alternative — if the world can rise to the infrastructure challenge.
